“Peace and an hour’s time — given these, one creates. Emotional heights are easily attained; peace and time are not.”

Edward Weston

From approximately 1920 until 1934, Edward Weston rose early in the morning and wrote down his thoughts in what he called his “day book.” I have been doing something similar for the past six or seven years, capturing a stream of consciousness in words and images. My daily practice is to rise between 4 and 5 AM, review news articles, photography articles, write, process images. Between 6 and 7 AM, if the weather is not foul, I head out to make pictures of what catches my attention as I walk around town. I then stop at a local coffee shop and write in my journal.

I have been posting my writings and the fruit of my daily photo walks daily for the past year. I plan to continue for as long as the effort makes sense to me. This website is the latest iteration of that online posting effort. Dip in and out as you feel compelled, leave a note if you are inspired to. I will be here for the foreseeable future.

Week 03

i have long wrestled with consciousness, the idea of it, the nature of it, what thoughtful person has not?… panpsychism, the idea that consciousness in not observable, it is experience and you may be able to dissect to some degree the mechanisms of experience rising into awareness in an organism, but one cannot get inside that experience… panpsychism posits the existence of experience even in sub atomic particles, but so rudimentary that we have no idea what the quality of that experience is… … Week 03

Week 02

my takeaway is that Cioran revels in fetid humanity, believes there is no meaning to life, thinks that any sane person should end their lives forthwith, there being no meaning it doesn’t matter if you are hero or coward, it is all the same, except one should be heroic enough to end it, which it is not clear that he ever took his own conclusions... … Week 02

Week 01

… i am attracted to this idea, does it mean that we are utterly alone in our universe because we alone created it?, and what role does a society of individual universes play in things?… … Week 01
