… i am sitting here thinking about Goliath, the series we are currently binge watching… i am thinking through the roles of men and women in the show and asking myself how enlightened the show is… at the center of the show is a patriarchal structure, the main protagonists are both men and in combat with one another… there are powerful women portrayed in the show, women with agency in the world, but they serve at the pleasure of the men, both sexually and professionally, who make them and break them… there is the successful ex-wife and ex-mistress of both men, the daughter, the prostitute office assistant, the ambulance chasing lawyer partner, all trying to moderate and navigate the battlefield the two men are engaged on, and each one becoming collateral damage in the process… it is a staunchly patriarchal story being told… a struggle between good and evil is playing out through the men… the women are secondary characters, second sex, despite their agency in their modern world… i read a review that is highly flattering but only barely gets to the point of the patriarchal structure of the drama… one thing occurs to me, the two patriarchs are both damaged and degenerate in their own ways… it is a decaying patriarchy… the women all have it together better than the men in the show… it will be interesting to see how this develops over the three seasons of the show…
