01 First Thoughts

230.8 lbs

… an upbeat HCR this morning, about the first 100 days of the Biden/Harris administration, a lot has been accomplished, a lot to do, two years to do it in, at least, that is how one needs to look at it… congress could change at the midterm, my hope from the beginning is that B/H admin would get enough done for the people that the people will keep them with full reigns on the government… the current iteration of the Republican Party must not get back into control of the federal government and power must be wrested from them in as many statehouses as possible, we are not out of the woods yet…

… petty annoyance, i renewed my car registration way back in March, the renewed registration never came in the mail and now April is done and it will be noticeably expired, and today i have to do sister work… i am tired of work for others that draws my attention away from what i want to do for myself… i may become reluctant to do this work in the future, though a few extra bucks is helpful…

… read Derek Jarman’s Modern Nature… it is melancholy because it chronicles his gardening in the face of his demise… it takes place at the height of the Aids crisis, which he succumbs to, as so many did, including M… a fraught and scary time, during which i was in a marriage that had its own sickness, but not the kind that kills one… at least not quickly…

… i slept better last night, though Fiona got me up at 01:30 AM to be let out… we all went back to sleep until 04:30 AM when i got up… i am grateful to have done the dishes and set up the coffee last night… things really do run better when that happens… i nonetheless feel groggy this morning, did not come to as quickly as i normally do…

02 Catcalling, Lee Soho

… every time i write the author’s name out, Soho, i think like the SOHO in NYC… is that a real Korean name and it just happens to match the NYC neighborhood name?, or did she adopt the last name?, it does not seem Korean to me… but then, i don’t know what Korean names should seem like…

Hyehwa District

… you, me, “I am from you,” the “long strand of hair laid on your bed,” her mother?, fingernail clippings figure prominently in the poems… detritus is what i would call them, like skin sloughed off, bits of ourselves shed back into the universe, i wonder how many miles of nails i have clipped in my lifetime, or hair for that matter… i will get a hair cut this coming week, my first since well before the pandemic began… the little things that spell normalcy are slowly returning…

Bamseom (A pair of uninhabited islets in the Han River)

… almost a haiku, brief, stark, a powerful emotional moment, what caused this moment?…

Roosevelt Island (NY?)

… the poet in love, her lover lives on Roosevelt Island and is a painter… Koreans doing uniquely American things mixed with Korean things… they are happy… then she returns to her home in Shanghai?, and a big snow falls… this one is less opaque…

Shanghai, Where You Don’t Live

… they are together in Shanghai (where she lives?) and they use an umbrella which Chinese lovers never do because the word for umbrella is the same as the word for scatter, so they don’t want to court bad luck for their relationship…

A Disappeared Person and a Forest That Didn’t Disappear or The Opposite of That

… a breakup poem…

Practice

… about meeting up after separating?…

Donna Ferrato: A Handmaid’s Tale

… i am familiar with her work centered on women… i read the article which is bookended by the January 06 insurrection… it is a book about the condition and courage of women in a patriarchal society… i am so tempted to buy it… $30, free shipping, should i shouldn’t I?… given the rabbit hole i have dived down… a research expense?… where will the money come from… hmmm…

an article on Carlotta Guerrera, who’s work has recently come to my attention… this image reminds me of the Picasso painting or is it Matisse?… it is Matisse, called The Dance…

another article on Carlota Guerrera, this time presenting work from her (photo?) diary between years 2015-2020… this work is much like my own, focusing on landscapes, shadows, spaces, not too many people…

an article on Peter Hujar and Moyra Davey… Moyra Davey has done a book combining her images and Hujar’s, both seem interesting, this from Moyra Davey…

04 Thoughts

… i am feeling frustration… i know i have work to do, books to make, submissions to make, but i am unable to set the time aside to make and submit, why is this?… too much damn interference… i need to be brutal about saying no…

… i read this morning that Donna Ferrato’s body of work on the sexual pleasure of women destroyed her career… the power of work the world is not ready for…

… we have birds nesting in our eaves… i have been hearing the sounds of them scratching their way in and out for several weeks… my plan is to wait for fall and end of nesting season to close it up…

… checking the weather i note there is a wind advisory… batten down the debris…

05 Walking

… i stop by the catalpa tree in the cemetery… it’s leaves are starting to burst out into the sun… i make some pictures of the tree… I especially need to photograph it when it’s flowering, i have no good photos of that part of its cycle…

Tree on the edge of Memorial park.

… thinking about what needs doing today… little of it is photography…

06 More Thoughts

… i ponder the question of why people are unable to embrace the world as it is as opposed to the world as they believe it is… the word believe is operative here, belief trumps facts…
